FRESH LOOK FOR THE POT LUCK CLUB, CAPE TOWN’S SMALL PLATES OG
South Africa, Cape Town, Tuesday 2 September 2025: A decade after pioneering the concept of small-plate dining in Cape Town, The Pot Luck Club has unveiled refreshed interiors, just in time for summer. First opened in 2012 by chef Luke Dale Roberts, The Pot Luck Club has always been about pairing bold Asian-inspired flavours with a side order of urban energy, all while dishing up some of the best views in the city from its eyrie atop the silos of The Old Biscuit Mill. And while the heart and soul of the menu remains, this new look and feel showcases a subtle evolution in style.
“This latest update is less about reinvention and more about embellishment,” explains interior designer Maurice Paliaga, who led the project. “We wanted to give the restaurant a touch more luxury, while maintaining everything people love about Pot Luck. Some elements were beginning to look a little tired, so this was about refreshing, strengthening and elevating the space.”
“It felt like the right time to give the restaurant a lift. We’ve been going strong since 2012, and with summer ahead, it was important for me to give the restaurant some love and attention,” adds Dale Roberts. “For me, The Pot Luck Club has always been about energy, adventure and surprise, so this refresh was about holding onto that spirit while making the space feel a bit more refined, a bit more luxurious.”

Paliaga’s design narrative introduces a darker, richer canvas for the restaurant. Wall cladding and slatwork under the counters have been finished with subtle LED lighting, while patinated brass crowns the counters for an elegant flourish. Seating has been upgraded with leather-wrapped school chairs, while the sought-after banquettes now offer higher backs and fluted upholstered leatherwork, balancing comfort with an upmarket edge.
This darker foundation contrasts with the lighter ash tabletops, which have been reused, resurfaced, and segmented into quadrants, creating a striking chequered grain of texture and character – a perfect stage for the creative plates that emerge from the kitchen led by Group Executive Chef Jason Kosmas.
Lighting has also been refined throughout, featuring under-counter LEDs and new task lighting over the dine-in kitchen counters, while the steel-cut screens have been updated and softened. The result is “a shift from a utilitarian to softer, richer spaces,” says Paliaga.
The refresh also leans heavily on local artisans and suppliers, with many of the details sourced from within a few kilometres of the restaurant’s Woodstock home.
“We’ve held onto these key relationships we’ve had in the past,” Paliaga adds. “It was important to strengthen those community ties while elevating the craftsmanship in the restaurant.”
While interiors have been elevated, they are designed to complement, not compete with, the restaurant’s show-stopping views across Cape Town.
“From the beginning, we knew we didn’t want to clutter the space with lighting or screens,” says Paliaga. “Visibility was an important factor; after the food, the view has to remain the hero.”

Over a decade since Luke Dale Roberts pioneered small-plate dining in Cape Town, The Pot Luck Club continues to deliver bold flavours and inventive style; its adventurous Asian-inspired menu and vibrant energy now been matched by eye-catching new interiors to ensure ‘Pot Luck’ remains one of South Africa’s most memorable culinary destinations.
“Working with Maurice and the team has been fantastic. They’ve managed to capture the essence of Pot Luck and elevate it in a way that feels both fresh and familiar,” adds Dale Roberts. “The Pot Luck Club has always evolved, whether on the plate or in the space. This revamp is just the next step in that journey.”
