Just seven months after opening, Welsh Chef Phil Carmichael’s ode to casual bistronomy takes a coveted gong at one of SA’s most prestigious dining awards. Celebrating its commitment to culinary excellence, innovation, and storytelling through food, this remarkable achievement solidifies the bistro’s reputation as a leader in South Africa’s hospitality scene.

Located in the heart of Stellenbosch, Mill St Bistro was founded by Michelin-starred Welsh Chef Phil Carmichael, whose vision was to create a refined yet relaxed dining experience that showcases the best local produce and wines.

“This restaurant is my passion project. It’s my baby, the culmination of 30 years’ graft in other people’s kitchens, winning awards for others, and now bringing my own vision to life,” says Carmichael, before adding, “To receive this award is not just a personal achievement, but a testament to the hard work and dedication of my entire team.”

Since opening, Mill Street Bistro has distinguished itself with bold yet accessible cuisine, a meticulously curated wine list, and commitment to sustainability. Sourcing ingredients from local farms, community gardens, and independent winemakers, Mill St has created a menu that allows the produce to shine while celebrating the region’s rich culinary heritage.

“We wanted to fill a gap in Stellenbosch’s dining scene,” Carmichael explains. “There are incredible fine dining restaurants and fantastic casual eateries, but we felt there was room for something in the high-end casual market, offering exceptional food without the formality of fine dining. This award validates that vision.”

A key highlight of Mill Street Bistro is its wine list, featuring an unusual cast of South African winemakers who share the restaurant’s minimal-intervention philosophy. The result is a dining experience deeply rooted in the Western Cape’s terroir.

“I’m gobsmacked,” said Carmichael upon winning. “It’s a testament to the dedication and passion of every person who walks through these doors and contributes to making Mill St Bistro what it is.”

The 2025 LUXE Restaurant Awards bring together South Africa’s most exciting names in hospitality, honouring establishments that go above and beyond in creating exceptional experiences. Judging is performed by a diverse panel of six judges from an overall committee of 50 independent leaders in hospitality, including chefs, writers, sommeliers, food critics, and more. Assessment is undertaken over a six-month period leading up to the ceremony itself, which took place on 18 February 2025.
