LE GRAND JARDIN BY WONDERLAND ESCAPES CELEBRATES
A JOYFUL 90th YEAR

South Africa, Stellenbosch, 3 December 2024; Set amidst the rolling vineyards of Stellenbosch in the Devon Valley, Le Grand Jardin – the iconic private winelands villa – celebrates its 90th anniversary this summer.

Origin Story

Previously the primary home of UK-based Bernard and Sue Fontannaz, the couple have opened the doors of Le Grand Jardin to multi-generational families around the world seeking a magical hideaway to reconnect with family and nature.

Bernard, a Swiss-French winemaker, is the founder of multi-national Origin Wine and also owner of Le Grand Domaine, a boutique winery, also situated in Devon Valley that enjoys extraordinary views of the valley beyond and produces a range of premium wines. Sue is a team leadership coach specialising in Biophilia and is also the custodian of Wonderland Escapes, a portfolio of out-of-the-ordinary villas and far-away cabins from Oxford, England to Mendoza, Argentina.

A Carousel of Wonder

Le Grand Jardin – an enchanting six en-suite bedroom villa that celebrates nature – is set on a five-acre garden with a 1930s carousel playing centre stage to remind all who visit that “the world is truly round and seems to start and end with those we love” – Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

The Sir Herbert Baker-style villa is a striking blend of grandeur and charm where Chase, the Great Dane, plays ‘Keeper of the Keys’. Inside, guests are transported into a world of whimsical wonder, where opulent antique furniture, vintage armchairs, Persian rugs, and modern works of art collide in a celebration of beauty and play. No two rooms are the same, and each is a masterclass in design, creating an eclectic space that feels both luxurious and welcoming. The interior décor, inspired by the restorative qualities of the expansive garden and surrounding vineyards, features vibrant colours and thoughtful details. A hand-painted De Gournay/Aquazurra wallpaper collaboration in the entrance hall invites guests into a world of colour and wonder.

The Looking Glasshouse: Ideal for Special Gatherings and Celebratory Occasions

A short stroll from the classically designed swimming pool and pavilion is the Victorian-styled Looking Glasshouse, a truly magical space that combines the beauty of nature with whimsical design. Built around a 100-year-old oak tree, the glasshouse offers a serene, sun-dappled setting for intimate gatherings and celebrations. Whether hosting a small wedding, milestone birthday, or family reunion, the Looking Glasshouse provides the perfect backdrop, complete with an indoor plant collection, a fireplace, quirky decorative trinkets, and art pieces that add to the venue’s enchanting atmosphere.

A Garden of Curiosity and Tranquillity

Beyond the villa lies the expansive garden and an invitation to wander off to a hidden world. The garden theme runs throughout the estate, with whimsical elements such as life-size Alice in Wonderland characters hidden near the eco-pool and a showman’s caravan, all adding to the sense of playful wonder that defines Le Grand Jardin.

With 500 rose bushes, lavender fields, and towering trees, the garden is a place to explore and relax. Winding pathways and a wild meadow lead through an organic vegetable garden, flower beds, and past ancient oak and pine trees, while playful features such as a nest swing, a trampoline, a teepee tent, and a hideaway house ensure there’s always something to discover.

The property’s eco-pool within the garden dam, complete with a charming wooden footbridge and deck in the centre, offers a refreshing escape. Guests may paddle, zipline, or relax in the jacuzzi while enjoying the breathtaking views of the surrounding vineyards. There’s also a sauna, spa area for a massage, as well as a fully equipped gym. As the sun sets, outdoor fireplaces light up the garden to enjoy a barefoot dance on the lawn or gather around the long table in the Looking Glasshouse for a feast beneath the stars.

Exploring Stellenbosch

Beyond Le Grand Jardin, guests are invited to enjoy immersive experiences including a private tour and wine tasting at Le Grand Domaine – just five kilometres from the villa – or take a stroll through the historic and bustling town of Stellenbosch with a stop for lunch at Enoteca where guests may also enjoy a tasting of Bernard’s impressive range of wines paired with a brasserie-style menu.Hot air ballooning, signature golf courses, private guided art and history tours, and hiking in the Helderberg are just a few suggestions that will likely have guests extending their stay!

Above all else, Le Grand Jardin offers complete privacy – a true luxury in our contemporary world. It is a magical setting of make-believe where laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever. In the sage words of Oscar Wilde, “Life is far too important a thing ever to talk seriously about”. Here’s to the next 90 years of joy and wonder!
